Tanzania Government Unveils Ambitious Jangwani Bridge Construction Project

In a historic address to Parliament on May 29th, 2024, Minister of Construction, Innocent Bashungwa, unveiled the government’s groundbreaking plan: to kickstart construction on the Jangwani Bridge as a cornerstone of the vast Msimbazi River Basin Development Project.
The minister’s announcement, made during the presentation of his ministry’s budget estimates for the upcoming fiscal year, captured the attention of legislators and citizens alike.
“The strategic construction of the Jangwani Bridge marks a significant step forward in our commitment to enhancing infrastructure and fostering sustainable development,” Bashungwa declared, emphasizing the bridge’s pivotal role in addressing longstanding infrastructural challenges in Dar es Salaam.
With an allocated budget of Sh1.7 trillion, of which Sh1.6 trillion is designated for development projects, the government is poised to make substantial investments in critical infrastructure. Bashungwa highlighted the project’s significance by highlighting its funding structure, which includes contributions from both the government and a World Bank loan.
At the heart of the initiative lies the ambitious Jangwani Bridge, a marvel of engineering set to span 390 meters, with connecting roads totaling 710 meters. Rising to a height of 15.5 meters above sea level, the bridge aims to combat the perennial issue of flooding on Morogoro Road in Jangwani during rainy seasons.
“The completion of the Jangwani Bridge will not only alleviate flooding but also ensure uninterrupted connectivity and facilitate economic growth,” Bashungwa affirmed, underscoring the project’s multifaceted benefits.
Speaking to reporters earlier in the year, project coordinator Engineer Humphrey Kanyenye shed light on the project’s progress, noting that the tender for the contractor had already been announced. Kanyenye also addressed efforts to compensate and relocate affected residents, emphasizing the government’s commitment to transparent and inclusive project implementation.
In addition to the Jangwani Bridge, the Msimbazi River Basin Development Project encompasses a comprehensive suite of initiatives aimed at transforming Dar es Salaam’s infrastructure landscape. From road construction and drainage systems to open spaces and markets, the project represents a holistic approach to urban development.
“The Msimbazi River Basin Development Project is not just about building bridges; it’s about building a resilient and sustainable future for our city,” Bashungwa asserted, underlining the project’s broader objectives.
The Tanzania National Roads Agency (Tanroads) is poised to play a pivotal role in the initiative, with plans to construct and rehabilitate over 400 kilometers of main roads and bridges. These efforts are poised to enhance connectivity and accessibility, laying the groundwork for future economic prosperity.
However, challenges remain, as highlighted by the Permanent Parliamentary Committee on Infrastructure. Chairperson Selemani Kakosa urged the government to prioritize compensation for affected citizens and reassess the placement of speed bumps, emphasizing the need for equitable development and infrastructure management.
Tanzania’s leap into this transformative journey showcases the government’s resolute dedication to infrastructure development and sustainable urbanization. The unveiling of the Jangwani Bridge construction not only underscores this commitment but also heralds a new era of progress and prosperity for Dar es Salaam and the nation at large.
