Governor Mbah Hails Speaker Abbas for Compassionate Leadership

April 23 rd 2025

In a strong display of empathy and national solidarity, the House of Representatives has presented a cheque of ₦18 million to the Enugu State Government to support victims of the January 25 petrol tanker explosion at Ugwu Onyeama, Enugu-Onitsha Expressway, which claimed multiple lives.

Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, PhD, GCON, described the explosion as a national tragedy and emphasized that the House would always stand with communities during times of crisis. The donation, he said, reflects the commitment of the 10th Assembly to responsive and compassionate governance.

Delivering the cheque on behalf of the Speaker, members of the Enugu State Caucus in the House – led by Rep. Nnolim Nnaji and comprising Reps. Martins Oke, Dennis Agbo, Mark Obetta, Anayo Onwuegbu, and Chimaobi Atu – visited Enugu to extend the House’s condolences and support.

“On behalf of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, we commiserate with the Government and people of Enugu State over the tanker incident at Ugwu Onyeama. This ₦18 million cheque is to assist in easing the burden left by the tragedy. The Speaker sends his heartfelt condolences and assures that the House stands with Enugu,” Rep. Nnaji stated during the presentation.

In a heartfelt response, Governor Peter Mbah expressed deep appreciation to Speaker Abbas and the Enugu Caucus for their thoughtful support, recalling the Speaker’s personal call shortly after the incident and now, his tangible show of solidarity.

“This is more than a donation; it is a reaffirmation of national unity and shared grief. The Speaker stood with us in prayer when the tragedy occurred. Today, he has come to stand with us physically and materially. We assure you this fund will be deployed with transparency and fairness to those affected,” Governor Mbah said.

The House reaffirmed its commitment to standing by all Nigerians in their time of need, reiterating its resolve to pursue people-centered interventions that improve lives across the country.

Signed:
Rep. Akin Rotimi, Jr.
Spokesman, House of Representatives
