Shock and grief have engulfed the Ondo State University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), Ondo, following the tragic and suspicious death of the institution’s Registrar, Mr. Ezekiel Imoleayo Adeniran, who was allegedly assassinated by unknown assailants.

The Ondo State Police Command has confirmed that the 41-year-old senior administrator was forced to ingest a poisonous substance by unidentified men. The incident, according to police, is being treated as a targeted killing.

Spokesman for the state police command, SP Olusola Ayanlade, disclosed that the attack was reported at the Fanibi Police Division, adding that investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend the culprits.

“I can confirm to you that the man was killed. From available intelligence, two men emerged from the bush and forced a substance into the victim’s mouth. We are working to uncover every detail surrounding this incident, including the exact location of the attack,” Ayanlade said.

He urged members of the public with relevant information to come forward, assuring them of confidentiality and the command’s commitment to justice.

The shocking development was earlier announced by the university through its Public Relations Officer, Mr. Isaac Oluyi, who described the situation as devastating. According to Oluyi, Mr. Adeniran was seen performing his official duties as recently as Monday, July 14, 2025, before the news of his sudden death surfaced three days later.

“Until his death, he was the third substantive Registrar of UNIMED, having assumed office on January 6, 2025. His unexpected death has thrown the entire University community into mourning,” Oluyi stated.

The brutal killing has raised concerns about the safety of public officials and the growing insecurity in the state. The university community, colleagues, and residents have continued to express disbelief and sorrow over the loss of the seasoned administrator, remembered by many for his commitment and professionalism.

As investigations intensify, the police reaffirmed their determination to ensure justice is served and the perpetrators are brought to book.
