
Alaafin of Oyo Advocates Citizen Engagement and Stronger Institutions for National Development
Akure Nigeria – October 29, 2025:
His Imperial Majesty, Oba Abimbola Hakeem Owoade III, the Alaafin of Oyo, has called for increased citizen participation in governance and the strengthening of public institutions to foster transparency, unity, and democratic growth across Nigeria.
Speaking during a citizen- Government Engagement Summit in Akure on democratic development and civic engagement, the revered monarch emphasized the rich cultural heritage and democratic traditions of the Yoruba people, noting that true progress can only be achieved when citizens are active participants in the policy-making process.
“Our history is replete with examples of democratic developments. Today, we must prioritize citizen engagement and participation to create platforms for citizens to contribute to the policy-making process,” the Alaafin stated.
He also stressed the importance of strengthening national institutions to ensure their independence, transparency, and responsiveness to the needs of the people.
“We must strengthen institutions, ensuring their independence and transparency. As traditional leaders, we have a critical role to play in promoting peace, unity, and development,” he added.
Oba Abimbola III expressed pride in representing the cultural and historical depth of the Southwest region, while reaffirming the commitment of traditional rulers to support democratic values and sustainable governance.
Concluding his remarks, the Alaafin extended his goodwill to dignitaries and participants at the event, wishing them a successful and productive deliberation.“Together, we can build a brighter future for our nation,” he said.
