Gunmen Attack Police Patrol in Ondo, One Arrested as Officers, Civilian Injured

Date: 22nd, December, 2025

The Ondo State Police Command has confirmed an attack on operatives of the Safer Highway Patrol at Ipele Junction in Ondo State, resulting in injuries to two police officers and a civilian, with one suspect arrested and a motorcycle recovered.
The incident occurred on December 17, 2025, at about 8:00 p.m., when three armed men riding on a motorcycle reportedly launched an attack on the patrol team while they were carrying out their lawful duties along the highway.
According to the Police, the assailants opened fire on the operatives, forcing the officers to respond in self-defence to repel the attack.
During the exchange, two police officers sustained injuries, while a female bystander later identified as Taiwo was also hit. All the injured persons were promptly taken to a hospital, where they are currently receiving medical attention.
In the course of the operation, one of the suspects, identified as Nwabali (male), was arrested. The motorcycle used by the attackers was also recovered at the scene.
Police authorities disclosed that the suspect, who is currently in custody, has made useful statements that are assisting ongoing investigations and efforts to apprehend the fleeing accomplices. The suspect  will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
The Commissioner of Police in Ondo State, CP Adebowale Lawal, psc(+), mnips, condemned the attack, describing it as tragic and reprehensible.
He, however, praised the Safer Highway operatives for their bravery, vigilance and swift tactical response, noting that their actions prevented the incident from resulting in loss of lives.
The Police Command said the incident further highlights the impact of ongoing policing reforms and improved operational strategies being implemented under the leadership of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM.
CP Lawal expressed appreciation to the Inspector-General of Police for his continued support, strategic leadership and investment in strengthening the country’s security architecture, while also commending the Safer Highway operatives for their gallantry.
Reiterating the Command’s commitment to public safety, the Commissioner assured residents of Ondo State that the Police would remain relentless in the fight against criminal elements, regardless of their location or tactics.
He stressed that all those involved in criminal activities would be tracked down and made to face the full weight of the law.
