Award: Health is very expensive– DR. Michael

By Exponent News. 15th, December, 2024

Dr. Michael Olumide-Gbala  the acting Chief Medical Director, University of Medical Sciences, teaching hospital in  Ondo has said that health is very extensive. He disclosed this to Pressmen after receiving an award of excellence which was bestowed on him by the PATH NEWS Magazine in Akure the state capital. DR. Michael expressed his  thoughts on the award  bestowed on him as a recognition of his services to humanity.

His words ” Well, this award is recognition of excellence and service to humanity. I think I’m glad that the organizers recognized our humble contribution to the development of mankind. We just feel we are doing our best to impart life. . We didn’t know that some people are actually watching, taking record of what we are doing.  This is going to inspire us to do more.We understand that some people are actually taking record of what we are doing. We will be spurred to do more”.

In another development,  when asked how the award would transfer to change the narrative of the hospital?  DR Michael said the award would change the narrative of their performance in rendering more selfless service to humanity in the hospital.” To change the narrative as CMD, for us to have the kind of healthcare that we want,  that can attend to the health needs of everybody in society. It involves every one of us, the citizens themselves, those of us who are practitioners, those of the managers of healthcare system, the government, and the corporate world.  All of us must put our hands together. Health is very expensive.”

He explained about the underfunded of the activities in the hospital.”Most times, we have underfunded . Although Government is doing a lot, but  I dare say that government cannot do it alone. Individuals will be willing to support government and to support the healthcare practitioners.”

Speaking further, DR Michael advised that everybody should key into the plans of the government as it would benefit them more. “In our contest, I will encourage that everybody key into the plan of government,  which is, although state government has floated,  the state has contributed health commission scheme. So, the former sector is working, the former sector has just been launched.  I would like to advocate that everybody key into the former sector.Thereby, we can improve the coverage for health, and more people can come under the safety.  One of the big challenges we have is the out-of-pocket expenses.  Most times, when people need to access our healthcare, they don’t have the money,  and they expect that the hospital should provide all they need.”

Similarly, the CMD said government had made the health scheme accessible for the people to enjoy. “”Things that the hospital actually purchase with money, somebody somewhere must pay for the healthcare. What government has done to make this accessible and available is making the contribution health commission scheme available. So, I want to encourage our citizens to key into it, as far as the former sector has started.”

He said “with this in place, there will be more money to run the health sector in the state.  And with more dedicated, with more passion, change of attitude from the healthcare providers,  things can be much better than what we have now”

DR. Michael Olumide  Gbala. Is the Acting Chief Medical Director, University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital. UNIMED.
