Dr. Kunle Omode, Program Manager of IMPACT Immunization Plus, outlines key initiatives aimed at reducing malaria and improving maternal and child health.

The Ondo State government is planning to allocate up to 12 billion Naira in 2025 for two critical components of its IMPACT project, which focuses on malaria prevention and reducing maternal and child mortality. Dr. Kunle Omode, the Program Manager for IMPACT Immunization Plus in the state, shared details of the ongoing efforts aimed at improving health outcomes.

Since launching the project in the third quarter of 2024, the state has made significant strides, including engaging non-state actors for malaria prevention and health worker training, as well as procuring essential medicines. The state has also initiated the upgrade of 102 primary healthcare facilities across 18 local governments, with contractors already on-site for renovation work.

A key component of the project is the implementation of a digital health management system, with the state procuring 216 laptops for health officers to streamline data collection. Additionally, community-based health workers will help raise awareness and facilitate access to healthcare for women and children in rural areas.

Dr. Omode highlighted the state’s commitment to reducing maternal and child mortality, pointing to previous successful interventions such as NSHIP and the ABIYE program. He emphasized that while significant progress has been made, there is still work to be done to ensure every woman and child receives the care they need.

Looking ahead, the project aims to tackle other health challenges in the state, including addressing the rise of Lassa fever. The 12 billion Naira budget will support continued efforts in malaria control and immunization services throughout 2025.
