House of Representatives Mourns Passing of Afenifere Leader, Pa Ayo Adebanjo

By Exponent News Akure, February 14th 2025

The House of Representatives mourns the passing of Chief Samuel Ayodele Adebanjo, the revered leader of the Pan-Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere. His death marks the end of an era and the loss of a distinguished nationalist and elder statesman, whose lifelong commitment to Nigeria’s development will remain unforgettable.

Chief Adebanjo made monumental contributions to Nigeria’s political landscape. A celebrated journalist, lawyer, and founding member of both the Action Group and Afenifere, he was a tireless advocate for justice, equity, and national unity. Even in his advanced years, Pa Adebanjo continued to be a powerful voice in national discussions, offering invaluable wisdom to guide the country toward a more just and unified future.

In a statement, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, PhD, GCON, remarked:

> “Chief Adebanjo will be remembered as a towering elder statesman and foremost nationalist who dedicated his life to promoting justice, unity, and equity among Nigeria’s diverse ethnic and religious groups. Even as a nonagenarian, he was actively engaged in national debates, with both the government and the people benefiting from his wealth of experience and insight.”

The Southwest Caucus of the House of Representatives also paid tribute to Pa Adebanjo, noting:

> “His unwavering commitment to justice and true federalism has left a lasting impact on our nation’s democratic journey. As a Caucus, we are dedicated to advancing the ideals he passionately championed.”

The House of Representatives extends its deepest condolences to the Adebanjo family, Afenifere, and the people and government of Ogun State during this difficult time. We pray for strength and comfort for his loved ones as they mourn the loss of their patriarch.

May the soul of Pa Ayo Adebanjo rest in peace, and may his enduring legacy continue to inspire our nation.

Signed:
Rep. Akin Rotimi, Jr.
Spokesman, House of Representatives
