SOS: Save Us from the Herdsmen, Regents Cry Out Loud

It was indeed a pathetic narration as the Regent of Ademekun Village, Omoba Adelowo Adekemisola of Akure North Local Government, expressed her sadness over the killings of fourteen of her subjects last weekend by the herdsmen who infiltrated her community and started shooting sporadically. The Regent, when narrating her experience before the Ondo State government representatives at a town hall meeting with cocoa farmers today at the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Adegbemile, in Akure, the state capital of Ondo State, said that her community had been battling the herdsmen problem for the past six years. She also mentioned that she had reported the cases to the previous administration of the state government when the former SSG to the governor, Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu-SAN, Mrs. Oladunni Odu, was in office, and appropriate action was taken, resulting in peace for the community.
Adelowo, who lamented before the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Forestry, along with other top government officials present at the meeting to sensitize farmers against building illegal structures in government forestry, also emphasized the importance of farmers making themselves available for data capturing and payment of dues to government-designated officers. This was meant to generate revenue for the state government while the farmers would benefit from trading in the government-reserved forests.
According to her, the herdsmen came through the Edo-Ondo boundary to attack them, but they were rescued by Amotekun during the Akeredolu administration, and the perpetrators were arrested and paraded. Peace returned to the community during that time. However, the attacks did not stop. Recently, a group of people who called themselves the “Commissioner’s Boys” in agriculture in Ondo State surfaced in her community, claiming to be sent by the commissioner, despite the fact that the governor had not yet appointed commissioners to his cabinet. She said these boys destroyed a nearby village, killing 100 cows between Thursday and Friday last week.
While speaking, Regent Adelowo said these boys came to attack her village on Saturday and killed fourteen people among her subjects. She mentioned that she had received calls during the meeting that two more people had been killed by the herdsmen and that the boys were threatening to kill her. She cried out loudly and clearly to the government of Ondo State, His Excellency Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, to come to their rescue from the herdsmen in Ademekun Village, Akure North Local Government.
The response from the government representatives was that those whose cases were critical should put their concerns in writing and channel their communication to the appropriate authorities for proper action.
