The rising threat of kidnappings and violent attacks by armed herders in Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State has prompted growing concern from the Independent Newspaper Publishers Association of Nigeria (AINPN). The recent escalation in security challenges has deeply unsettled the association, which believes the public deserves fair and truthful reporting on these issues without stoking unnecessary fear.

As key stakeholders in the state’s development, it is our responsibility to speak out, for silence in these times would be a disservice to the people. The current state of insecurity paints a troubling picture, showing that Ondo State is not as safe as the authorities may claim. The tragic killing of 20 farmers by armed herders, despite the state government’s attempt to downplay the event, and the shocking display of five farmers’ bodies by angry protesters at the Governor’s Office on March 19th, should be a serious concern to all.

While Governor Aiyedatiwa has made significant investments in the state’s security infrastructure since taking office, recent events underscore the need for more decisive action to safeguard the lives and properties of Ondo’s residents. No amount of investment is too great in ensuring the safety of the people the governor swore to protect.

It is time to move beyond rhetoric. We urge Governor Aiyedatiwa to urgently review and restructure the state’s security framework, bringing in new leadership with fresh ideas and tactics. While the current security personnel have made commendable efforts, the state’s pressing needs demand swift and effective changes to restore Ondo’s reputation as one of Nigeria’s safest states.

The security leadership in the state must be comprised of professionals with the expertise and passion to deliver results—not political appointees who have been placed in these positions as favors. Governor Aiyedatiwa must consider all available options for restoring order to the affected communities and the entire state. It is crucial for him to have trustworthy security aides who will provide him with accurate information, not those prioritizing political games over the safety of innocent citizens.

To effectively secure lives and property, the Governor must increase investment in the welfare of security personnel, expand intelligence efforts, initiate joint operations, increase Amotekun’s manpower, incorporate modern technology, establish security posts in high-risk areas, and ensure adequate supplies of patrol vehicles, motorcycles, ammunition, and other necessary security equipment.

With the application of modern technology, we believe that the security threats of kidnapping, banditry, and attacks by herders will be significantly reduced in a short period.

Additionally, we call on the Governor to reprimand his aides for making reckless statements that further tarnish the image of the government. Instead of showing empathy for the suffering people, their actions have caused more harm.

Mr. Governor, to truly fulfill your “OUR EASE AGENDA,” ensuring the security of lives and property is paramount. As an association, we remain committed to acknowledging the positive actions of your government, while also highlighting areas that require attention and improvement.

Long live AINPN
Long live Ondo State
Long live Nigeria

E-Signed,
Dupson Collins
State Secretary, AINPN
