Admin 30th April 2025.

As we approach the 2027 general election, it is imperative to assert a conversation that champions fairness, justice, and equity. The time has come for the political pendulum to decisively swing in favor of Akure North in the race for the Federal House of Representatives seat.

The Akure South/North Federal Constituency encompasses two dynamic local governments, each filled with brilliant, capable, and visionary individuals more than ready to represent their people at the federal level. However, a critical examination of our historical representation reveals a striking imbalance that demands immediate rectification. Upholding the principles of inclusiveness and equality is essential in a true democracy.

A Historical Perspective

Since the inception of Nigeria’s Fourth Republic in 1999, the House of Representatives seat for the Akure South/North Federal Constituency has been monopolized by representatives from Akure South. The record is undeniable:

– Hon. Akin R. Omoseebi (1999 – 2003) – Akure South
– Hon. Ifedayo Abegunde (2003 – 2007 and 2011 – 2015) – Akure South
– Hon. Derin Adesida (2007 – 2011 and currently serving 2023 – 2027) – Akure South
– Hon. Afe Olowokere (2015 – 2019) – Akure South
– Hon. Adedayo Omolafe (2019 – 2021; until his unfortunate demise) – Akure South
– Hon. Mayokun Lawson Alade, who won the by-election to complete the 2019 – 2023 tenure – Akure South

For over two decades, Akure South has held the seat, effectively sidelining Akure North and ignoring its equal constitutional stake in the constituency.

The Call for Equity and Balance

The Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria unequivocally establishes the equality of all citizens and communities within a federal constituency. The inclusion of two Local Government Areas under one constituency demands shared representation, not domination by one area. It is high time Akure North claims its rightful turn.

Akure North is not short of competence, vision, or leadership. The local government is home to illustrious sons and daughters, technocrats, professionals, and public servants who have made substantial contributions, both locally and nationally. These exceptional individuals are fully equipped to provide quality representation, championing development aspirations for both Akure South and Akure North while fortifying the unity of the constituency.

Why the Pendulum Must Shift

Equity and Fairness: Representation must embody balance. After over 24 years of uninterrupted representation from Akure South, it is only just that Akure North steps forward.

Unity and Inclusion: Affording Akure North the opportunity to represent the federal constituency cultivates a sense of belonging and unity within the federal constituency.

Fresh Vision and Energy: An Akure North representative will introduce new perspectives, invigorating ideas, and innovative solutions that will propel growth in both LGAs.

Constitutional Right: The citizens of Akure North are equal stakeholders. Their right to political opportunities cannot be overlooked or minimized.

As we gear up for the 2027 elections, the clarion call for justice, fairness, and equitable representation must resonate with every stakeholder in the Akure South/North Federal Constituency. It is time for Akure North to assert its rightful position in the leadership arena, ensuring that democracy effectively serves all its citizens.

The pendulum must swing decisively toward equity, unity, and progress for Akure North.
