“Democracy Is a Journey With Struggles” – Ondo State Governor Reflects on June 12

By Exponent News Akure 12th June, 2025.

As Nigeria commemorates the historic June 12 Democracy Day, the Governor of Ondo State has called for patience, reflection, and collective responsibility in the ongoing democratic journey, reminding citizens that democracy is not an event but a process shaped by perseverance and the sacrifices of the past.

Speaking during a state event themed “June 12: Losses and Gains in Relation to Today’s Democratic Realities in Nigeria,” the governor emphasized that no society is static and that democracy must continue to evolve to meet the needs of its people.

“Democracy is a journey that comes with struggles,” he said, acknowledging the many Nigerians who lost their lives and ideals during the battle for democratic governance. “Give us some time; it’s not yet time to start judging us. We are working to meet the needs of our people.”

He praised the credibility of the June 12 elections, describing them as free, fair, and a true reflection of the people’s will—just like the election that brought him into office. “The people spoke with one voice,” he noted, drawing parallels between past and present democratic milestones.

The governor reaffirmed the government’s commitment to democratic values, pointing out that citizens now enjoy their rights without fear or harassment. He stressed the importance of cooperation among the three arms of government—executive, legislature, and judiciary—for effective checks and balances.

In his speech, he expressed appreciation to nationalists and patriots within the state who played pivotal roles in the restoration of democracy. He also thanked the people of Ondo State for the confidence they have reposed in his administration.

On state matters, the governor highlighted ongoing achievements, including the prompt payment of workers’ salaries, implementation of the new minimum wage, recruitment of teachers, and payment of pensions. Security across the state remains a priority, he assured, adding that efforts are in place to sustain peace and development.

The governor commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his economic reforms, particularly revenue expansion efforts that have enabled the state to implement several capital projects. Among these is the subsidized distribution of the Odatiwa electricity meter, aimed at improving access to energy.

He concluded with a call for balanced civic engagement: “Commend when you need to commend, and also criticize when you need to criticize,” urging citizens to play an active role in shaping the nation’s democratic future.
