In a symbolic gesture that marked a new chapter for the Digital Media Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), the Chief Press Secretary (CPS) to the Governor of Ondo State , Mr Ebenezer Adeniyan was formally decorated as the Patron of the Chapel during a brief but emotionally charged ceremony at his office in Alagbaka Akure.

The honour, which was endorsed by the Ondo State Council of the NUJ, was bestowed in recognition of the CPS’s longstanding commitment to media development, professional mentorship, and selfless service to the journalism community.

Speaking on behalf of the members,  Mr Adesoye AJAYI, the Chairman of the chapel said “This is a new chapter and we need someone to look up to as a mentor and senior colleague. That is the reason we are here today to officially decorate you and entrust you with this honour.”

Delivering his acceptance remarks, the CPS expressed deep appreciation for the recognition, describing it as both an honour and a responsibility. “I feel elated not just for being named a patron, but for the trust you’ve placed in me,” he said. “I know what it means to nurture a new chapel, as my own journey started in a similar way about a decade ago.”

He recounted his personal journey through the ranks of the NUJ Secretary—from intern to state and national union leadership—emphasising that his present position was built on years of sacrifice and commitment. “I officially joined NUJ in January 2002, and I’ve had the privilege of serving at the chapel, state, and national levels. Almost 20 years of active union service has shaped who I am,” he said.

Reflecting on his tenure as CPS, he acknowledged the support he continues to enjoy from media professionals in the state. “It is that support and friendship that have made my job easier. Even though I haven’t been able to personally reward everyone, I’m grateful for the continued solidarity.”

The CPS further pledged to use his new role to support the Chapel’s initiatives and growth. “If you have ideas or projects that need support, please don’t hesitate to reach out. I will do my best to contribute to the success of this Chapel,” he assured.

The ceremony was rounded off with prayers and a formal presentation of a symbolic item to the CPS by officials of the Chapel, representing both the Digital Media Chapel and the Secretary of the State NUJ Council Mr Olaoluwa .

The event underscores the importance of collaboration between the media and public officials, as well as the critical role of mentorship in sustaining journalistic standards and union development in Nigeria.
