Ondo Police: CP Afolabi Out, Lawal In

By Exponent News  Akure | June 30, 2025

In a solemn but celebratory handover ceremony at the Ondo State Police Command Headquarters, the baton of leadership officially changed hands as CP Wilfred Olutokunbo Afolabi bowed out as the 45th Commissioner of Police, paving the way for the assumption of duty by CP Adebowale Lawal as the 46th Commissioner.

Addressing senior officers, members of the press, and security stakeholders, CP Afolabi reflected on his tenure, describing it as one marked by commitment, collaboration, and notable progress in combating crime across Ondo State. “It is a glorious day, one that upholds the finest traditions of our job — the handing and taking over. This moment symbolizes continuity in leadership and shared responsibility,” he said.

CP Afolabi, who had assumed office in early 2025 during a turbulent security period, recounted his achievements, including the introduction of the Community Safety Partnership model, improved inter-agency synergy, and the significant reduction in kidnapping cases — with none reported in the last one month.

“I want to correct the erroneous impression that my redeployment is due to any external agitation. Posting in the police force is routine. Since 2023, I’ve had three postings. I accept this as the will of God and move forward in good faith,” he stated firmly.

He expressed gratitude to the Inspector General of Police for his trust and technical support, and to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa for sustained collaboration and logistics backing. He also appreciated the media and people of Ondo State for fostering mutual trust that significantly enhanced intelligence gathering and operational efficiency.

“My number one legacy here is the rebuilding of mutual trust between the police and the people. Over 70% of our successes came from information shared by the public,” he added.

In his inaugural remarks, the new Commissioner, CP Adebowale Lawal, pledged to build on the solid foundation laid by his predecessor. “It is a big shoe, but with the support of the management team, stakeholders, and the people of Ondo State, I am confident we will surpass expectations,” he said.

Acknowledging the collective responsibility of security, CP Lawal called on all partners — the military, civil defence, Amotekun Corps, and non-state actors — to work hand-in-hand with the command to sustain and improve peace and safety in the state.

The transition was described as seamless and professional, a testament to the discipline and continuity entrenched in the Nigeria Police Force.
