House of Reps Hails CGC Adewale Adeniyi on WCO Council Chair Election

The House of Representatives has congratulated the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR, on his election as Chairperson of the World Customs Organisation (WCO) Council.

Adeniyi emerged as Chair during the 145th and 146th WCO Council Sessions held in Brussels, Belgium, marking a historic moment for Nigeria and the African continent.

The WCO Council, comprised of heads of 186 customs administrations worldwide, is the organisation’s highest decision-making body. The Chairperson’s role is pivotal in shaping global customs strategies, fostering consensus among member states, and promoting international trade facilitation.

In a press statement issued from Abuja on Monday, June 30, the Chairman of the House Committee on Customs and Excise, Hon. Leke Abejide, praised Adeniyi’s leadership qualities and the reforms he has championed within the NCS.

“The election of CGC Adewale Adeniyi is a significant milestone for Nigeria and Africa at large,” Abejide said. “It reflects his unwavering dedication to reform, transparency, and innovation in the Nigeria Customs Service. We are confident he will bring the same level of professionalism and integrity to this new responsibility at the helm of the WCO Council.”

The House also noted that Adeniyi’s elevation is not only a personal achievement but a national one, underscoring the progress of Nigeria’s customs administration under his watch.

Speaking on behalf of the legislature, the House Spokesman, Rep. Akin Rotimi, Jr., reaffirmed the lawmakers’ commitment to effective legislative oversight and support for the Customs Service.

“The House remains dedicated to promoting institutional excellence and enhancing Nigeria’s voice in global economic platforms,” he said.

The WCO, headquartered in Brussels, plays a central role in global customs administration, standard-setting, and capacity building.
