In a surprising political twist, the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Osun State has thrown its weight behind President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for re-election in the 2027 presidential race — despite being in the opposition — while also reaffirming its full support for Governor Ademola Adeleke to contest for a second term under the PDP in 2026.

This was part of the resolutions contained in a communiqué issued at the end of a high-powered caucus meeting of the Osun State PDP, held on Monday, July 21, 2025, at the Government House, Osogbo.

According to the communiqué, the endorsement followed weeks of consultations, opinion sampling, and engagements with party members, traditional rulers, civil society, and other stakeholders across the state. The caucus emphasized that local political sentiments and grassroots support remain key in shaping the party’s direction.

“The PDP in Osun State recognizes the fact that Osun State is the ancestral home of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which makes the President the son of Osun State. Therefore, the PDP in Osun State hereby adopts and endorses President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for re-election in the 2027 presidential election,” the document read.

While dismissing speculation about Adeleke’s planned defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC), the caucus noted that such moves did not originate from the governor and had been met with hostility from APC stakeholders.

It further revealed that although many PDP members expressed dissatisfaction over the rumor of defection, they remained loyal to Adeleke’s leadership. However, the meeting resolved that Adeleke should remain in the PDP and contest under its platform in 2026.

Other key resolutions include:

Reaffirming the popularity of Governor Adeleke, the state government, and the PDP across Osun State.

Directing the party leadership to communicate the resolutions to all structures of the PDP across the state.

Urging Governor Adeleke to focus on delivering good governance through his Five-Point Agenda.

The communiqué was signed by Governor Ademola Adeleke and 27 other top party leaders, including former Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola, Deputy Governor Prince Kola Adewusi, Senators Lere Oyewumi and Oluwole Alabi, Rt. Hon. Adewale Egbedun, Hon. Bamidele Salam, and Dr. Muyiwa Oladimeji, among others.
