Ondo NUJ Congress Calls for Urgent Repairs of Press Centre, Decries Casualization in Media Industry

By Exponent News, Akure | 4th August 2025

The Ondo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has called on Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa to order the immediate renovation of the union’s Press Centre in Akure, following severe damages caused by recent rainstorms.

This was part of the resolutions contained in a communique issued at the end of the NUJ Monthly Congress held on Wednesday, 31st July 2025, at the Press Centre, Alagbaka, Akure. The Congress was presided over by the State Chairman, Prince Leke Adegbite, and attended by journalists across all chapels in the state.

The Congress deliberated extensively on issues bordering on politics, economy, security, agriculture, environment, union affairs, and the welfare of its members.

Among the key resolutions, the Congress:

Expressed deep concern over the deplorable condition of the Ondo NUJ Press Centre’s roof and ceiling, urging Governor Aiyedatiwa to direct urgent repairs to prevent further structural damage.

Commended the appointment of Hon. Idowu Ajanaku as Commissioner for Information and Orientation, describing him as a seasoned journalist, while urging the government to implement strategic policies that will advance journalism practice in the state.

Condemned the casualization of media workers, particularly by private media outfits, labeling it a violation of International Labour Laws, and called on media owners to uphold professional labour practices.

Appealed to the Federal and Ondo State Governments to address the acute manpower shortage in public-owned media organizations like FRCN, NTA, OSRC/Orange FM, and The Hope Newspaper, emphasizing their critical role in government-public communication.

Applauded journalists in the state for their commitment to ethical reportage, while warning against the dangers of misinformation and urging constant fact-checking, especially with the increasing influence of artificial intelligence in content creation.

Congratulated the re-elected leadership of the National Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Ondo State chapter, charging them to sustain efforts in promoting the rights and welfare of women and the girl child in the state.

The communique was drafted and signed by the Communique Drafting Committee comprising David Fidelis (Correspondents’ Chapel), Ebunoluwa Akinroyeje (OSRC/Orange FM Chapel), and Kayode Animasaun (FRCN Positive FM Chapel).

It was electronically signed by the NUJ State Secretary, Olaoluwa Meshack.
