Family Disputes Suicide Claim as Ondo Govt Orders Coroner’s Inquest into UNIMED Registrar’s Death

The controversy surrounding the death of Mr. Ezekiel Imole Adeniran, Registrar of the University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), Ondo, has deepened as the Ondo State Government has ordered a coroner’s inquest to determine the true cause of his death.

The Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Olukayode Ajulo, OON, SAN, in a letter to the Chief Judge of the state, Honourable Justice Olusegun Ayedun Odusola, invoked the provisions of the Ondo State Coroner’s Law, requesting the appointment of a coroner to conduct the inquiry.

Acting on the request, the Chief Judge has appointed Dr. Dickson Ogunfuyi, Chief Magistrate and Head of the Ondo State Multi-Door Court, to preside over the inquest.

Mr. Adeniran reportedly died on July 17, 2025, allegedly after drinking poison following a white paper that indicted him and recommended his dismissal. However, his family rejects the suicide narrative, claiming he was forcibly poisoned by unknown assailants.

Dr. Ajulo emphasised that the inquiry would be thorough, transparent, and in the public interest, ensuring that due process is followed to determine the cause and manner of death, as well as any possible criminal responsibility.
