Akure, August 14, 2025 — The National Orientation Agency (NOA), Ondo State Directorate, has issued a fresh warning to residents over the growing risk of Mpox infection, urging immediate vaccination as the most effective safeguard.

NOA State Director, Mr. James Adekunle, said the viral disease — formerly known as monkeypox — though generally less severe than smallpox, can still cause serious illness and complications, especially for vulnerable groups.

According to health experts, Mpox spreads through direct contact with bodily fluids, lesions, contaminated materials, respiratory droplets, and sexual contact. Pregnant women can also transmit the virus to unborn babies, while skin-to-skin contact during or after birth poses further risks.

Symptoms usually appear within 5 to 21 days of exposure and include fever, swollen lymph nodes, body aches, and a rash that progresses from pimples to blisters and scabs. Complications may include skin infections, pneumonia, proctitis, urinary discomfort, confusion, and eye problems.

The NOA stressed that while anyone can be infected, healthcare workers, caregivers, and people with weakened immune systems face higher risks. The virus remains contagious from the onset of symptoms until full healing, usually over two to four weeks.

Residents are advised to avoid close contact with infected persons, maintain proper hygiene, and get vaccinated. The vaccine, given in two doses four weeks apart, is safe, free, and available in health facilities across the state.

“Prevention is better than cure,” Mr. Adekunle said. “Mpox is preventable, but only if we act now to protect ourselves, our families, and our communities.”

The NOA urged residents to rely on verified public health channels for updates and to take personal responsibility in the fight against the disease.
