Boy Dies After Alleged Assault Over Cocoa Pod Theft in Akungba; Suspect Arrested

23rd September, 2025

Tragedy struck at Akunmi Quarters, Akungba, on 20th September 2025, when a young boy reportedly died following a severe assault after being accused of plucking cocoa pods from a local farm.

According to the Ondo State Police Command, the boy was brought to the police station unconscious around 2:30 pm. He was immediately rushed to a hospital for urgent medical care but sadly passed away at approximately 5:36 pm.

In response to the incident, the Police promptly arrested the complainant suspected to be responsible for the assault. The deceased’s body was taken to the hospital morgue for autopsy, and the case has now been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Akure, for thorough and discreet investigation.

Commissioner of Police, CP Adebowale Lawal, psc(+), mnips, condemned the act and issued a stern warning against vigilante justice, urging the public to avoid taking the law into their own hands. He stressed the importance of reporting disputes and alleged crimes to law enforcement to ensure justice is properly served.

The Commissioner also thanked Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, for his support and leadership that continues to enhance the Command’s capacity to respond effectively to such incidents and maintain peace in Ondo State.

The Police Command extends condolences to the family of the deceased and assures the public of a fair and professional handling of the case in line with the rule of law.

Residents are encouraged to partner with the Police to promote security and justice throughout the State
