Donald Trump Threatens War Against Nigeria

By Exponent News Nigeria
November 2, 2025

The President of the United States of America, Donald Trump, has threatened war against Nigeria over the continued killings of Christians in the country.

In a statement posted on his X page, Trump warned Nigeria to “end the Christian killings now, or face U.S. aid cuts and troop action.” He called on the Nigerian government to stop the violence against Christians by Islamist militants such as Boko Haram.

Trump stated that he had instructed the Department of War, led by Secretary Pete Hegseth, to prepare for possible action. He also announced that Nigeria had been added to the U.S. Religious Freedom Watchlist, citing over 5,200 Christian deaths in 2024.

In response, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu rejected Trump’s accusations, insisting that there is no religious intolerance in Nigeria. He emphasized that the Nigerian government has been committed to fighting terrorism and protecting all faiths. The government also highlighted its ongoing anti-terrorism efforts amid mixed global reactions to Trump’s statement.

Meanwhile, human rights activist Omoyele Sowore criticized Trump’s threat. In a post on his X page, Sowore argued that the United States has failed to bring peace to countries where it has intervened militarily. He warned that any U.S. military action against Nigeria would only worsen the nation’s problems rather than solve them.

His post read:

“The latest threat by U.S. President Donald Trump (@POTUS) to launch military action in Nigeria, allegedly to protect Christians, may sound appealing to some. Still, history has shown this to be perilous.

Whether you are Christian, Muslim, animist, or non-religious, no one should celebrate such rhetoric. The United States and its allies have a long record of military interventions that leave nations more unstable than before. They failed to secure peace in Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, or Syria—and they won’t bring salvation to Nigeria through bombs or boots on the ground.

What Nigeria truly needs is not a foreign savior, but legitimate, accountable leadership—one that protects all citizens, upholds justice, and ends the cycles of corruption and violence that have left the nation broken.

@realDonaldTrump does not care about Nigerians—Christians, Muslims, or anyone else. Our deliverance will never come from abroad; it must come from within, through real leadership (not the Tinubus of this world) and national renewal.”

As the 2027 general election approaches, Nigerians must remain vigilant in protecting the nation from any external aggression. The government and security forces must work tirelessly to end the killings and kidnappings occurring in parts of the country.

Nigeria’s military, being capable of maintaining internal peace, should not rely on the threats or interference of foreign powers. As the Yorùbá proverb says, “A man who owns nothing but a nylon bag does not care if Lagos burns.” The Nigerian government must therefore act decisively to end terrorism and kidnapping, ensuring peace and stability across the nation.
