Impostor Arrested in Ondo for Allegedly Defrauding Family of ₦1.2m Retirement Benefits

21st November, 2025

The Ondo State Police Command has apprehended a man who allegedly posed as a Nigerian Army personnel to defraud a family of their mother’s retirement benefits. The arrest marks another significant breakthrough in the Command’s intensified campaign against fraud and impersonation.

According to the Command, the arrest follows sustained intelligence-led efforts under the leadership of the Commissioner of Police, with strong strategic support from the Inspector-General of Police.

The suspect, Temigbe Jamiu Adeola, a 35-year-old male, was taken into custody after detectives uncovered that he falsely presented himself as a serving soldier. He allegedly obtained ₦1,200,000.00 from one Mr. Temiloluwa, funds reportedly representing the retirement benefits of the victim’s mother, invested in property.

Investigations revealed that the victim’s son had sought Adeola’s assistance in retrieving the benefits. Instead, the suspect, in collaboration with yet-to-be-arrested accomplices, diverted the entire sum for personal use. Police say the case highlights ongoing risks posed by impersonators exploiting unsuspecting citizens.

Upon interrogation, Adeola confessed to the crime and admitted he had been discharged from the Nigerian Army since 2023, after serving with the 82 Battalion, Enugu. The Command confirmed that his claims of being an active-duty soldier were fabricated to facilitate the fraud.

The suspect remains in lawful custody while investigations intensify to track down the accomplices still on the run. Police authorities say charges will be filed in court as soon as investigations are concluded.

The Ondo State Police Command reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property, urging residents to stay vigilant and promptly report suspicious individuals or activities to security formations across the state. The Command pledged to continue strengthening intelligence-driven operations under the direction of the Inspector-General of Police.
