Ondo Moves to Modernise State Laws as Attorney General Charges Law Commission

16th January,2026

The Ondo State Government has renewed its push to modernise the administration of justice with a directive to the State Law Commission to initiate new legislations and reform outdated laws to reflect contemporary social, economic, and technological realities.
The Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Olukayode Ajulo, SAN, OON, gave the charge in Akure while receiving the Chairman of the Ondo State Law Commission, Mr. Femi Okunjemiruwa, alongside other board members during a courtesy visit to his office.
Dr. Ajulo said one of the core commitments of Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa’s administration is to improve access to justice by ensuring that laws in the state are fair, modern, simple, and cost-effective. He explained that this commitment informed the governor’s decision to revive the State Law Commission after more than a decade of inactivity.
Describing society as dynamic, the Attorney General urged the commission to critically review existing laws, recommend reforms for their modernisation, and propose new legislations that align with constitutional principles and evolving societal values.
He further tasked the commission with removing anomalies in state laws, codifying enactments, and strengthening justice administration to enhance clarity, fairness, and efficiency across the legal system. According to him, continuous review of laws is necessary to identify obsolete or conflicting provisions and to address emerging issues driven by social, economic, and technological changes.
Dr. Ajulo noted that the governor’s intention in resuscitating the commission was to simplify the legal framework of the state and ensure that its laws reflect present-day realities.
Earlier, the Chairman of the Ondo State Law Commission, Mr. Femi Okunjemiruwa, expressed appreciation to Governor Aiyedatiwa for reviving the commission, acknowledging its past contributions to the development of laws in the state.
He said the visit was aimed at familiarising the commission’s management with officials of its supervising ministry, adding that the Attorney General had brought renewed energy and innovation to the administration of justice in the state.
However, Mr. Okunjemiruwa drew attention to challenges facing the commission, including poor office accommodation, inadequate staffing, lack of operational vehicles, and insufficient working tools.
