Arogbofa at 87 Embodies Grace, Intellectual Vitality — Calls Grow for Afenifere Reforms – Adetokunbo

Elder statesman and renowned scholar, Seinde Arogbofa, has been described by Prince Adetokunbo Kayode- SAN Former Minister of Defence as a symbol of divine grace and intellectual resilience at 87, as admirers highlight his active lifestyle and enduring contributions to scholarship and Yoruba socio-political discourse.
Speaking with Pressmen  in admiration of the octogenarian , Adetokunbo noted that Arogbofa continues to walk unaided, read without glasses, and remain intellectually productive through ongoing writing—qualities described as rare even among much younger individuals.
“At 87, he eats what he likes, moves freely, reads, and still writes books. Many who are decades younger cannot match that level of vitality,” he said, emphasizing that his life serves as both inspiration and benchmark for younger generations.
Beyond personal admiration, Arogbofa’s work on Afenifere has also reignited conversations around the structure, inclusiveness, and future direction of the influential Yoruba group.
His writings were said to have clarified longstanding ambiguities about Afenifere’s identity—whether as a political, cultural, or socio-cultural body—while offering historical insight into its evolution and ideological foundation.
Analysts say this intervention comes at a critical time, as debates continue over the organisation’s accessibility and relevance. Historically perceived as a closed circle, Afenifere has faced criticism over limited inclusiveness, even among accomplished Yoruba elites.
“There is a need to open up the space, bring in fresh perspectives, and allow younger voices to participate,” the source noted, stressing that the organisation’s leadership, largely composed of octogenarians and nonagenarians, must evolve to remain impactful.
Stakeholders further argued the need for Afenifere to reposition itself as a dynamic force capable of advancing Yoruba interests in a rapidly changing socio-political landscape, rather than remaining anchored in past structures.
Highlighting the broader cultural context, Arogbofa’s admirers pointed to the resilience and global influence of the Yoruba people, citing their contributions across diverse fields and the enduring presence of Yoruba culture in the diaspora, even dating back to the era of transatlantic slavery.
They maintained that organisations like Afenifere have a critical role to play in preserving and promoting Yoruba heritage, warning against cultural stagnation.
“Afenifere must not become fossilized. It should be rejuvenated by integrating younger generations and expanding its scope,” Prince Adetokunbo added.
Observers agree that Arogbofa’s legacy—both as a scholar and cultural advocate—offers a pathway for renewal, blending historical depth with forward-looking reforms aimed at sustaining Yoruba identity and influence for generations to come.
