Residents and commuters in Akure witnessed a major boost in transportation infrastructure on Monday as Vice President Kashim Shettima commissioned the state capital’s first flyover bridge, with the Federal Government describing the project as a catalyst for economic and industrial growth in Ondo State.
The newly completed Onyearugbulem–Shagari/Irese Road Flyover and Junction Improvement Project, located along the Ilesha–Akure–Owo Expressway, was inaugurated amid commendations for the Ondo State Government’s efforts at tackling persistent traffic congestion and improving road safety.
Speaking at the event, Shettima said the project would not only ease traffic flow around the busy Irese junction but also enhance commercial activities and connectivity within the South-West corridor.
He described the flyover as a strategic infrastructure investment capable of stimulating development and supporting regional integration.
Ondo State Governor, Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, who hosted the ceremony alongside Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, said the project marked a historic milestone as the first flyover bridge ever constructed in Akure.
According to Aiyedatiwa, the junction had for years been notorious for traffic gridlock, road crashes, and delays that negatively affected economic activities and commuters entering the South-West region.
The governor explained that the project was initiated under the administration of the late former governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, and later completed by his administration as part of ongoing infrastructure renewal efforts across the state.
In honour of elder statesman and Afenifere leader, Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti, who clocked 100 years on Monday, the governor named the flyover after him.
Aiyedatiwa said his administration has continued to prioritise road construction and rehabilitation projects across the state, citing ongoing and completed works on the Akure–Idanre Road, Akungba–Ikare Road, Okitipupa–Igbokoda Road, and several other major routes.
He noted that over 100 kilometres of roads have either been rehabilitated or resurfaced across the three senatorial districts to improve mobility, attract investment, and enhance the quality of life of residents.
The governor also praised the engineers, contractors, and indigenous professionals involved in the project, while appreciating residents for their patience throughout the construction period.
Top government officials, traditional rulers, security chiefs, and other dignitaries attended the commissioning ceremony.
