The Association of Independent Newspaper Publishers of Nigeria (AINPN) has expressed deep concern over growing irregularities in political party primaries across the country, warning that the trend could weaken Nigeria’s democratic process if not urgently addressed.
The position was contained in a communiqué issued after the Association’s general meeting held on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, at its secretariat, where members reviewed recent political developments and the conduct of party primaries ahead of upcoming elections.
AINPN condemned reported cases of vote-buying, violence, arbitrary disqualifications and other lapses in internal party democracy, noting that such practices erode public trust in the electoral system and undermine democratic consolidation.
The Association stressed that party primaries must remain transparent, inclusive and credible, insisting that all aspirants deserve equal opportunity and fair hearing during candidate selection processes.
According to the communiqué, issues relating to eligibility, including age verification, nomination requirements and financial compliance, should be resolved before the commencement of primaries to avoid confusion, disputes and allegations of manipulation.
AINPN also urged political parties to strictly adhere to their constitutions and the provisions of the Electoral Act in conducting primaries, saying respect for laid-down rules would reduce post-primary litigations and strengthen the legitimacy of candidates produced through the process.
The Association further called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognize only primary elections conducted in line with electoral laws and party guidelines.
While appealing to aggrieved aspirants to embrace lawful channels for resolving disputes, including appeal committees and formal petitions, AINPN reaffirmed its commitment to promoting peace, fairness and responsible journalism in Nigeria’s democratic journey.
The communiqué emphasized that credible primaries remain the foundation for credible general elections and sustainable democracy.
