The Ondo State Police Command has arrested a woman over an alleged false kidnapping accusation that sparked a mob attack on a commercial motorcyclist in Ore, Odigbo Local Government Area, raising fresh concerns about misinformation and jungle justice.
The incident occurred on June 4, 2026, when Miss Abigael Bright allegedly accused a motorcyclist, Mr. Rasheed Awojobi, of attempting to kidnap her while conveying her from Ogo Oluwa Street to Idi Mango Street in Ore.
According to the police, the allegation quickly spread through the community and triggered a violent reaction from residents and passers-by, who reportedly assaulted the motorcyclist before police operatives intervened. Awojobi sustained injuries to his face and other parts of his body during the attack.
Preliminary investigations by the Command revealed that the kidnapping allegation was unfounded. Police further discovered that the claim was allegedly circulated on the suspect’s WhatsApp status, contributing to widespread panic and the dissemination of false information within the community.
The suspect has since been taken into custody and is assisting investigators. Police said the victim was rescued from the mob and provided with medical attention. Authorities added that appropriate legal action would be taken upon the conclusion of investigations.
Reacting to the development, the Commissioner of Police in Ondo State, CP Felix Ohagwu, expressed concern over the growing trend of false reports and the reckless spread of unverified information capable of disturbing public peace.
He warned that false accusations, particularly those involving serious crimes such as kidnapping, could provoke dangerous reactions, threaten innocent lives, and erode public trust in due process.
The police chief also strongly condemned the mob attack on the motorcyclist, stressing that no individual should be punished based solely on allegations or suspicion.
“Jungle justice remains a criminal act that often results in human rights violations, miscarriage of justice, and avoidable loss of lives,” he said.
Ohagwu urged residents to report complaints and suspicions to law enforcement agencies rather than resorting to self-help. He also warned that anyone involved in mob action or the deliberate spread of false information would be prosecuted.
The Commissioner reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to the policing vision of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, which prioritises professionalism, intelligence-led policing, community partnership, and the protection of citizens’ rights.
The Command advised members of the public to verify information before sharing it, particularly on social media, and to promptly report suspicious activities to the nearest police station.
Police said they remain committed to maintaining law and order, protecting innocent lives, and ensuring justice is served in all circumstances.
