Breaking: Police Restricts Vehicle Movement Ahead of Ondo South Bye-Election

Akure, June 19, 2026

The Ondo State Police Command has announced a restriction of vehicular movement across the Ondo South Senatorial District ahead of the by-election scheduled for Saturday, June 20, 2026.
According to a statement issued on Friday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, movement of vehicles and transportation on waterways will be restricted from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. as part of security measures designed to ensure a peaceful, orderly, and credible electoral process.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Felix Ohagwu, assured residents that adequate security personnel have been strategically deployed across the district to secure polling units, collation centres, electoral offices, and other critical locations throughout the election period.
The command explained that only accredited officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), election observers, accredited journalists, emergency responders, and other individuals legally authorized to perform election-related duties would be exempted from the movement restriction.
The police warned that unauthorized vehicular or waterway movement, as well as any activity capable of disrupting the electoral process, would not be tolerated. Security operatives have been directed to enforce the restriction professionally while ensuring respect for the rights of law-abiding citizens.
CP Ohagwu also cautioned political actors and their supporters against electoral offences, including violence, voter intimidation, vote-buying, and thuggery, stressing that offenders would be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
He further disclosed that the command had intensified intelligence gathering, visibility policing, strategic patrols, and joint operations with other security agencies to guarantee security before, during, and after the election.
The commissioner expressed appreciation to Ondo State Governor, Dr. Orimisan Lucky Aiyedatiwa, for his support in strengthening the state’s security architecture and commended the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, for providing strategic leadership toward securing electoral processes nationwide.
The Ondo State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property while ensuring that the Ondo South Senatorial District by-election is conducted in an atmosphere of peace, safety, and public confidence.
