The Students in the Secondary schools in Nigeria, reference to Ondo State in particular,  both in urban and rural areas has suffered academic loss during the conduct of the May /June examinations, which Teachers referred to as National assignment.

Findings revealed that during the period of eight weeks the examination lapsed, most learners suffered the absence of their teachers, as there were nobody to engage the learners in the classroom for teaching and learning during this period, as some of them jf not most of their teachers had gone for WAEC supervision to enrich their pocket at the expense of the learners who are there to learn in order to have a better future for themselves. The situation reports is the same across the three Senatorial zones in the state.

In another development, teachers argued that they needed to engage in the exercise for the purpose of getting additional  source of income to boost their primary income.

Meanwhile,  the Evaluators who came to evaluate schools across the three Senatorial District in the State said it’s good to get another source of income but not at the expense of the learners who had paid the schools in order for them to get quality teaching service from their Teachers .

Meanwhile, the School Management, in their opinion, said the Ministry of Education had compelled  each schools in the State as a matter of necessity for them to supply at list one or two teachers  in  their school for the exercise.

According to them, the rule was that if their schools failed to bring out a personnel that would take part in the exercise, their school too would not have supervisors that will supervise their candidates . Therefore, it behold on them to respond to the calls of their employers.

In furtherance to this, the Evaluators made the teachers to know that the rule of teaching engagement, does not permit the teachers to go for any event that would make the learners to suffer set-backs in their academics without any proper arrangement made by that teacher to cover their primary assignment for the learners.

While teachers were saying that for the period of six weeks that they were absent, most of the time, they normally organise make up teachings for the learners whenever they we’re done with the WAEC / NECO. But the Evaluators knocked this idea out when they were addressing the staff that such make up teachings violated the rights of the learners because it does not come at the appropriate time.

They’ said that, the time the learners needed to be resting their brain or enjoying their reading are the period some of those teachers that engaged in the supervision are using to disturb their learners. And that such period or time are too close to the time learners are  starting of their intenal examination. Thereby, making them to perform woefully in their academics due to the short period left behind which in some cases may not be enough for them to read to pass for the examination.

However, most of the schools visited , the complaints of shortage of Teachers by the school authorities in some cases top the request of those schools . Over crowding of the classrooms and other factors are some of the reasons that were causing poor performance in the achievement and standard of the learner’s.

The call for the government to recruit more qualified Teachers that would replace those that have retired as well as those that are at verge of exiting the system also form part of the demand of these noble professional .
