Administrator Samantha Power to Speak on Supporting Sudan and the Locally Led Response to the Crisis

On January 31, USAID Administrator Samantha Power will deliver remarks at the U.S. Institute of Peace to highlight the frontline civilian response and humanitarian efforts working to help save lives amid the ongoing conflict in Sudan. The event will also feature a panel of frontline responders who will discuss their work to address the humanitarian crisis in Sudan.

Since war erupted between the Sudanese Armed Forces and Rapid Support Forces militia in April 2023, Sudan’s internal displacement crisis has grown into the world’s largest, with more than nine million people internally displaced. Nearly one in every eight internally displaced persons worldwide is now Sudanese. Some 25 million Sudanese – more than half the population – need urgent humanitarian assistance, amid some of the world’s most difficult humanitarian access conditions.

As the largest donor to the people of Sudan, USAID is continuously working with partners to determine the best ways to quickly and safely deliver humanitarian assistance to people in need within and outside Sudan where conditions allow, including by supporting Sudanese local response networks.
