Bishop Fredrick Shoo Urges Tanzanians to Reject Self-Serving Leaders

At the national service commemorating CCT Day at the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Tanzania (ELCT) in Mtwara on May 26, 2024, Bishop Fredrick Shoo, Chairman of the Christian Council of Tanzania (CCT), delivered a powerful message urging Tanzanians to eschew self-serving leaders, particularly those who abandon their constituent’s post-election.
“When you choose a Member of Parliament to represent you in parliament, and they disappear as soon as they step foot in the assembly, the fault lies with you, the one who elected them. Let us choose those who will genuinely care for the interests of the nation.
If there is a member of parliament who you’ve seen neglecting their duties since they were elected in 2020, but suddenly reappears in the year of elections, going door-to-door seeking support, tell them that we do not recognize them as they do not recognize us,” emphasized Bishop Shoo.
He urged Christians to seek out God-fearing individuals irrespective of religious affiliations and encourage them to vie for leadership positions.
“It is our responsibility to scrutinize what kind of leaders are just and God-fearing, and even encourage them to take up leadership roles. Let us look for righteous people, regardless of their religion or denomination, as they are well-known everywhere.
These are the people we should entrust with the responsibility of running for office so that we don’t end up just complaining,” he urged.
Acting Secretary General of CCT, Godlisten Moshi, echoed Bishop Shoo’s sentiments, calling on Christians to support qualified candidates regardless of political affiliations, religions, or denominations.
“We need to fully prepare ourselves, especially for the general elections, to run for office when we have the qualifications so that we can elect qualified leaders and God-fearing. Let us come out in large numbers,” stated Moshi.
In his address, Mtwara Regional Commissioner, Colonel Patrick Sawala, encouraged citizens to gear up for the election process, emphasizing the importance of voter registration and participation. “This year, there will be registration for the Permanent Voters’ Register and updating of information. Let’s follow up on this important matter to register and participate. Christians, let us pray for the upcoming elections to be conducted peacefully, fairly, and justly,” concluded Colonel Sawala.
Dr. Shoo’s bold condemnation of societal vices underscores his fearless commitment to advocating for ethical governance and moral leadership.
His outspokenness serves as a beacon of courage, inspiring others to confront wrongdoing and uphold principles of justice and integrity.
Through his unwavering stance, Dr. Shoo empowers citizens to demand accountability and transparency from their leaders, fostering a culture of accountability and ethical conduct in Tanzanian society.
