Transforming Tanzania’s Livestock Sector: Embracing Innovation for Economic Growth

In a riveting address at the prestigious Livestock Auction Show held at “Mbogo Ranch” in Ubena Zomozi, Pwani Region, Tanzania, on June 15th, 2024, the Deputy Minister of Livestock and Fisheries Alexander Mnyeti, captivated the audience with his impassioned call for Tanzania to embrace cutting-edge livestock farming practices.
With unwavering conviction, he heralded a new era of agricultural advancement, urging stakeholders to leave behind outdated methods and seize the transformative potential of modern farming technologies.
He highlighted the urgency of abandoning traditional methods that no longer align with contemporary market demands, both domestically and globally.
Mr. Mnyeti’s bold stance resonated deeply among attendees, urging a paradigm shift towards modern techniques that promise not only higher yields but also adherence to international standards of quality and hygiene.
As the event unfolded, showcasing the potential of progressive farming models, it became evident that Tanzania’s livestock sector is poised for transformative growth under visionary leadership and strategic partnerships.
“I must speak plainly because it is my duty, as appointed by the President, to tell the truth. Cattle that are not vaccinated and properly cared for do not meet the standards for human consumption, whether in Tanzania or abroad,” stated Hon. Mnyeti.
Addressing attendees at the event, Hon. Mnyeti urged livestock farmers to embrace practical training provided at the exhibition grounds, aimed at transforming their farming techniques towards commercial viability.
Meanwhile, Mr. Frank Nyabundege, CEO of Tanzania’s Agricultural Development Bank (TADB), the principal sponsor of the Livestock Auction Show, reaffirmed the bank’s commitment to supporting these initiatives due to their significant impact on improving livestock farming practices across the country.
“To date, our bank has allocated approximately Sh 25 billion to the livestock sector, focusing on value chain enhancement and dairy farming. We encourage young farmers to approach us; with our low interest rates, we offer systems that ensure sustainable benefits,” explained Mr. Nyabundege.
The coordinator of the Livestock Auction Show, Mr. Naweed Mulla, outlined the event’s goal to demonstrate that successful commercial livestock farming is achievable in Tanzania, under the theme “Farming for Business, Building a Better Tomorrow.”
Livestock keeping plays a pivotal role in Tanzania’s economy, being a leading sector in agriculture and contributing significantly to rural livelihoods. With over 22 million cattle, Tanzania ranks among the top countries in Africa for livestock production. This sector not only provides food security but also serves as a crucial pathway out of poverty for millions of Tanzanians.
