Economy: MSMEs Contributes 49% Of Nigeria GDP–Adeyemi
By Olusegun HOSEA, 21th July, 2024.

The Chairman , Nigerian Association of Small and Medium Enterprises, Ondo State Chapter, Prince Temitope Olu-Adeyemi has said that micro, small and medium enterprises-MSMEs have contributed about 49% to the gross domestic product -GDP presently in Nigeria.

Speaking during the 5th Anniversary ceremony of Topshot Magazine News published by Mrs Ngozi Aduloju which was  held at Akure , Ondo State Capital. Mr Adeyemi explained that Nigeria is the largest employer of labour as about 85% of the country population is being taken care of by this sector but the sector has been lacking quite a number of things.

Adeyemi who spoke on a theme titled : Strategies for Enhancing Growth of MSMEs Sector in Ondo State explained that although government is trying her best in ensuring that development come upon this sector but said that if they could have  round pegs in a round hole they would achieved more

.He implored the government to always fixed the best expert to manned the sector that suit their expertise inorder for them to perform well and achieve good productivity for the betterment of the development of state economy and country at large.

In another development , Adeyemi opined that government should really look into this sector , if actually, they want the best from the sector . According to him ” Ondo State has a potential to be among the greatest economy in Africa than some countries in the world. He said those countries do not have one third of the resources we have in Ondo State and they are doing very well”.

Explaining further, Prince Adeyemi said there was no resources in the state that we didn’t have in commercial quantity but nothing is done about it ” When asked reasons why it was like that and perhaps what is the way forward? Prince Adeyemi has this to say. That the successive government and even current one have always been relying on the allocation from the central government to meet the needs of one or two people and that was the end of that .To him, he believed this should not be.

Similarly, Prince Adeyemi said a Governor that really prepared for the office would give people a good delivery in time of development but said most of them come into the office just because they just want to be Governor. He said MSMEs sector are the best that could generate development to the state if government really want to develop it. He sighted Oluwa Glass Factory in Ondo State before it went moribund that her Glass product was the best in the world.

He said the state has abundant mabble which is the best but nothing is being done about all these minerals resources. He said government need to sit down and re-appraise what is on ground and see what could be done about them to ensure that all these industries could be brought to light, generate employment and also boost the state economy.

While, speaking, Prince Adeyemi proposed that government should put two good heads together in order to set up an economy team that would not necessarily be a politicians of which a mandate should be given to them in term preference for them to come up with good idea that could better our economy. But said the unfortunate thing was that if you didn’t belong to the rulling party your opinion doesn’t count .

Advising government to do away with the idea of politicising good things that could benefit the entire indigenes of the state , Prince Adeyemi concluded that what would solve the state economy problem was for the government to stop depending on the Federal allocation but rather constitute an economy team that would come up with a blue print that would enhance the economy development  in all ramifications which is the one we have been yarning for in our Ondo State.
