President Samia Suluhu Praises Tanzania Ports Authority Despite Opposition Criticism

President Samia Suluhu Hassan, during an address at the State House in Dar es Salaam on 11th June 2024, brought into sharp focus the pivotal role played by the Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) in the country’s economic landscape. Her remarks underscored the significance of TPA’s contributions to government revenue, setting a tone of appreciation for the organization’s exemplary performance.
“TPA’s steadfast dedication and remarkable contributions to government revenue serve as a testament to the agency’s pivotal role in driving economic growth and development,” President Hassan remarked, encapsulating the sentiment shared by many stakeholders present at the event.
The Tanzania Ports Authority emerged as a beacon of efficiency and productivity, leading the group of institutions contributing a commendable 15 percent of gross revenue to the government. With a staggering contribution of Sh153 billion, TPA’s unwavering commitment to excellence has undoubtedly positioned it as a cornerstone of Tanzania’s economic prosperity.

The event also served as a platform to recognize other notable contributors to government revenue, including NMB Bank Plc, Twiga Minerals, and Airtel Tanzania. Each entity received accolades for its significant contributions, underscoring the symbiotic relationship between the public and private sectors in driving economic growth.
Ruth Zaipuna, CEO of NMB Bank Plc, echoed President Hassan’s sentiments, emphasizing the pivotal role of collaboration and innovation in driving sustainable economic development. “NMB Bank is committed to harnessing innovation and fostering collaboration to drive economic growth and enhance financial inclusion,” Zaipuna remarked, reflecting on the bank’s transformative journey towards becoming a catalyst for positive change.
Twiga Minerals and Airtel Tanzania were also lauded for their substantial contributions to government revenue, with both entities exemplifying the spirit of partnership and progress. Eliud Sanga, Chairman of Airtel Tanzania, expressed gratitude for the government’s proactive stance in creating an enabling business environment, which has facilitated the company’s growth and success.
“The government’s proactive approach to addressing regulatory challenges has created a thriving and competitive market environment, allowing Airtel to thrive and contribute meaningfully to government revenue,” Sanga remarked, highlighting the company’s commitment to continued collaboration and investment in Tanzania’s telecommunications sector.

Chama Cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo (Chadema), wigs including prominent figures like Tundu Lissu and Freeman Mbowe, have been vocal in criticizing President Hassan’s administration. They have specifically targeted the controversial DP-World Scandal, which involves the alleged privatization of the Dar es Salaam Port at what they deem to be a throwaway price.
Tundu Lissu and Freeman Mbowe have accused President Hassan of selling off valuable public assets at bargain rates, thereby undermining the nation’s economic interests. They argue that such actions not only jeopardize Tanzania’s sovereignty but also deprive its citizens of the benefits derived from these critical resources.
In response to these allegations, President Hassan has vehemently defended her administration’s actions, asserting that any agreements involving public assets are conducted transparently and in the best interests of the nation.
She has emphasized the need for strategic partnerships and investments to bolster infrastructure and stimulate economic growth. Moreover, she has reaffirmed her commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring accountability in all government dealings.
