In Democracy, political parties plays a major roles in the Democratic system of government in any country that practice democracy. The leader in the helm of affairs in Administration must belong to one political party or the other before he or she can attain a leadership position on the governing of the people. For this reason, this write up set to look at the political parties and the politicians attitudes in democracy.

Definition of the political party: This can be defined as an umbrella body of the people of like mind that come together to form  party for the purpose of having a  unique name for themselves and pursue their political agenda for the benefits of their members and the society at large.

In Nigeria setting, there are many political parties of which the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and All Progressive Party (APC) form the major  parties in the country. It’s a common thing among the politicians to dump one party for another, for a reason that is best know to them. The purpose of joining party  is to have an affiliate platform for omes self in order to pursue a political agenda and also to benefits from such party if they are in government or in power.

However, if a political party  is not benefiting any politicians, as it ought to be, such politician will have to look for other party that will  accommodate them together with their missions . This is what is making a politicians to dump one party for another one. The writer refers to  this as politicians attitudes in the Democracy.

Similarly, the then news on Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde who denies dumping (PDP) as a party for another party called Advanced Democratic Congress (ADC) is a typical example of politicians attitudes in democracy. Weather fake news or genuine, the fact remain that a politicians always cultivate this type of habit of deflecting from one party to another, especially, when they discover that their political ambition in their recent party is not going to see the light of the day . They have to move to another party that will accommodate them. In the words of his spoke man Taiwo Adisa as reported in national daily news ‘ There is concocted lie making the rounds about Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State planning to dump the PDP he said.” The Governor clarified his position on the rumour saying he had no plan to defect to another party.

However, in Ondo State, when DR. Olusegun Mimiko – Former Governor in the State was in the same PDP party, he discovered that he can not realized his political ambition of becoming the governor of the State if he is still carrying the membership card of the said party. Therefore, to achieve his mandate , he has to dump the party and form a labour party before he was able to rule as a Governor in the State.

Also, the former Senate President Dr.  Buka Saraki came in under the APC and later dump the party for PDP. This trend among the politicians is what is causing breach of political trust among the electorates and the politicians. The acts is also, causing political tension among the political parties in the country. For instance, the then incumbent Governor of Edo State , Godwin Obaserki ( now former ) who was a member of the All Progressive Party before now defected to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) when he realizes that he can not achieve his political ambition of his second time election in office in his former party-APC. The saga caused tension and many lives waisted during their electioneering campaign. The certificate forgery of which his political opponent accused him of  perhaps may be as a result of  his defection from the party. But at last , he got judgement of victory from the court of law.

Internationally, politics in United States of America, has  just two major political parties. The Democrat and the Republican party. You can either join any of these two political parties or you stand aloof while operating as independent candidate or become an ordinary citizen in the land. This system of having two parties have brought some development to some extent within their country .Nigeria has practice this before but later jettison the system for some obvious reasons. Although, Iam not canvasing for the two political parties or against it, but the truth of the matter is that proliferation of the political parties can help politicians to achieve their aims and objectives while at the same time, the concept can lead to waiste of the national resources of economy.

In conclusion, be it as it may, the political parties and the politicians Attitudes in Democracy in term of defection from one party to another has generated a lots of hot lead in the national daily of which the contents has form a public opinion of discussion among the citizens. This acts is had to eradicate among the Politicians. As long as the Democracy is still in practice, the subject will still keep on trending .
