2025: School Expenses Spark Another Struggle for Parents

By Exponent News, 5th January 2025

As 2024 fades into memory with its myriad challenges, some struggles persist, stretching into the new year. One of the most pressing issues facing many families as they begin 2025 is the recurring burden of school fees. This annual expense marks the start of yet another financial struggle for parents, particularly as school terms resume.

Across both private and public schools, whether primary or secondary, parents are once again faced with the task of paying for their children’s education. These costs begin to pile up, and failure to meet these obligations could prevent children from attending school. For boarding school students, this is especially true, as school authorities often require full payment before allowing students to return.

The recent holiday season offered some respite, as families indulged in moments of joy. Many parents took their children to cinemas, visited public recreational spots like Ojaja Park, ShopRite, Kilimanjaro, and Emanuel Park, and bought goodies to make the holiday special. However, the festive period is now over, and it’s time to face the daunting school fees once again, with students set to return to class on Monday, January 13th, 2025.

Despite the heavy financial strain, neither federal nor state governments have taken steps to reduce the cost of education. While there are claims that education is free, the reality is far different. Parents continue to bear significant costs for school logistics, which are often masked under terms like “miscellaneous” fees, a catch-all for various expenses, including school feeding in public schools. Moreover, the wages of many public and private sector employees are insufficient to cover these mounting costs.

To meet their children’s educational needs, some parents are resorting to loans, while others dip into their personal savings. This financial pressure is particularly intense at this critical time of year, creating considerable stress for families.

Transportation costs also add to the burden. While the government has introduced shuttle buses to ease the transportation needs of students, the reality is that these buses don’t cover all routes, leaving many students dependent on alternatives like Okada (motorcycle) services. In many cases, parents are left with no choice but to provide additional funds for their children’s transportation, further escalating expenses.

As students prepare to return to school, parents are left grappling with how to pay for their children’s education while ensuring their academic comfort. The new year brings with it another cycle of financial struggles for many families, resulting in stress, headaches, and, for a fortunate few, some relief. It’s high time for both the federal and state governments to take meaningful action to alleviate the burdens on citizens and improve the overall quality of life for families across the country.
