The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, Ph.D, GCON, has identified the 2025 Appropriation and Tax Reform Bills as key priorities for the federal legislature this year. In his address at the resumption of the National Assembly from the Christmas and New Year break, delivered by Deputy Speaker Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, Speaker Abbas emphasized that these bills are critical for the country’s economic recovery and fiscal stability.

The Speaker stated that the tax reform bills are designed to broaden the tax base, improve compliance, and reduce reliance on external borrowing, while ensuring fairness and consideration for all Nigerians, especially the most vulnerable. He also highlighted that the ongoing constitutional review process, with over 350 memoranda submitted, would address long-standing structural issues and promote inclusivity, equity, and accountability within Nigeria’s governance framework.

“The constitutional review and other legislative priorities will focus on resolving systemic issues and improving governance,” Speaker Abbas said. He expressed confidence that the review process, under the leadership of the Deputy Speaker, would lead to significant reforms that would benefit the country.

The Speaker also reaffirmed the House’s commitment to enhancing transparency and citizen engagement through initiatives like the Citizens’ Town Hall on the budget. These efforts are aimed at ensuring that legislative actions are aligned with national objectives and responsive to the needs of the public.

Additionally, Speaker Abbas underscored the importance of collaboration between the National Assembly and the Executive, stressing that the shared goal of national progress requires constructive engagement across all branches of government. He called on lawmakers to remain focused on service, equity, and progress in meeting the expectations of the Nigerian people.

As Nigeria prepares to observe the Armed Forces Remembrance Day, Speaker Abbas paid tribute to the nation’s fallen heroes and reaffirmed the House’s commitment to supporting the welfare of military personnel.

The Speaker concluded with a call for renewed dedication to governance, stating, “By working with purpose, unity, and resolve, we can transform challenges into opportunities and aspirations into realities.”

This statement from the Office of the Speaker reflects the House’s resolve to meet the pressing needs of the nation through legislative actions that promote economic stability, governance reform, and public welfare.
