Ondo State Launches IMPACT Project to Combat Malaria and Improve Maternal Health

By Exponent News.28th January, 2025

The Ondo State Primary Health Care Development Agency (OSPHCDA) has officially launched the IMPACT Project aimed at reducing malaria and improving maternal health in the state. The event, held at Bliss World Hotel in Akure, brought together key stakeholders, including government officials, health experts, and international partners such as WHO and UNICEF.

The IMPACT Project, which focuses on accelerating immunization coverage and transforming health services, aims to strengthen service delivery and improve primary healthcare across Ondo State. Dr. Francis Adegoke Akinbiemu, Permanent Secretary of OSPHCDA, expressed gratitude for the support from the state government and various partners, emphasizing the project’s significance in achieving universal health coverage and reducing preventable diseases like malaria.

Key highlights of the event included discussions on the revitalization and digitalization of primary health centers, the importance of data-driven health supervision, and the role of training and capacity building in enhancing healthcare services. Dr. Babatunde Akinbinu, Case Manager for RMNCAHTN in Ondo, highlighted the project’s focus on malaria prevention and the training of local officers to carry out immunization programs effectively.

Dr. P. Kunle Omode,  the State Project Manager IMPACT (Immunization Plus)  stressed the need for upgrading health facilities to ensure quality service delivery, noting that the IMPACT Project has already started renovating health centers across the state. He also mentioned the provision of laptops for health officers to improve service quality and facilitate data collection.

Mr. Bayo Philips, the Ondo State Head of Service, underscored the importance of stakeholder collaboration in strengthening the state’s health sector and reiterated that the state is committed to revitalizing 102 health facilities to ensure access to quality healthcare, especially in remote areas.

The IMPACT Project, backed by the World Bank, is set to make significant strides in improving health outcomes for the people of Ondo State, with particular emphasis on reducing child mortality and improving maternal health services.
