Journalists’ Network Calls for Stricter Laws, Community Involvement to End Female Genital Mutilation in Nigeria

The Network of Reproductive Health Journalists Nigeria (NRHJN) has intensified calls for a more proactive approach in the fight to eliminate Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) across Nigeria. In a statement issued by the Ondo State Coordinator, Alhaja Fatima Muraina, the Network emphasized the urgent need for stricter laws, enhanced community involvement, and stricter enforcement to end the harmful practice.

The statement urged stakeholders to take drastic measures, such as targeting Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs), who are often involved in performing FGM due to the financial benefits they gain from the procedure. It called for the monitoring of delivery methods and testing before immunisation is administered to ensure the protection of young girls.

The NRHJN stressed that the practice continues covertly, with parents still seeking out those who perform FGM in secret. It called on health professionals from both public and private sectors to take responsibility in identifying and apprehending perpetrators.

The statement further advocated for more robust government action, calling for investigations at immunisation centres, where any attempt to carry out FGM should lead to immediate arrests and legal consequences. “Perpetrators should face the full wrath of the law,” the statement declared.

Additionally, the Network urged law enforcement agencies to step up efforts in enforcing existing laws against FGM, recommending stiffer penalties, such as longer prison sentences and significant fines, to act as a deterrent.

Community engagement was another key aspect highlighted, with the NRHJN calling on religious and traditional leaders to educate their communities about the dangers of FGM and counter harmful myths. Schools were also encouraged to incorporate anti-FGM awareness into their curriculum to inform young girls about their rights and the health risks of the practice.

The Network also urged media outlets to continue their advocacy through investigative journalism and public enlightenment campaigns, ensuring that those who continue to perpetrate FGM are exposed. It emphasized the importance of supporting victims, providing legal aid, and ensuring rehabilitation services are available.

Finally, the NRHJN expressed appreciation for non-governmental organisations and civil society groups who have been at the forefront of raising awareness about FGM, calling for greater collaboration to achieve a zero-tolerance stance on the practice. The statement concluded by urging authorities to track progress in the fight against FGM and ensure perpetrators are held accountable for their actions.

“Perpetrators must stop endangering the lives of our girl-children,” the Network firmly stated.
