Akure, 16th February 2025

The Commissioner of Police for Ondo State, CP Wilfred Olutokunbo Afolabi, has visited Ifon to conduct an on-the-spot assessment of the damage caused by a violent attack on the Divisional Police Station. The attack, which included arson and destruction of properties, was condemned by the Commissioner, who ordered a full investigation into the incident.

The incident began on 15th February 2025 when a dispute between two families on Ogbomo Street escalated into a public altercation. Police officers, led by an Inspector, intervened and made arrests. One of the individuals involved in the fight, Tobi Bobade, was brought to the station by a concerned citizen, Mr. Losilosi. Bobade, who appeared weak, was immediately taken to a nearby hospital but was later pronounced dead while receiving treatment. His remains have been deposited at the Federal Medical Centre in Owo for a postmortem examination.

In response to the news of Bobade’s death, an angry mob, led by the deceased’s father, launched a violent attack on the police station. The mob set fire to several parts of the station, including the administrative office, the DPO’s office, and two exhibit vehicles. Fortunately, no lives were lost, thanks to swift action by security personnel, who secured the premises and called for reinforcements.

During his visit, CP Afolabi met with the Chairman of the Local Government, community leaders, and other stakeholders. On behalf of the Inspector General of Police, he expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and condemned the attack. He vowed that those responsible would face the full consequences of the law.

The Police Command is urging the public to remain calm and avoid taking matters into their own hands. Investigations are ongoing, and further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
