South South Caucus Mourns the Passing of Chief Edwin Kiagbodo Clark, A National Icon and Advocate for Regional Development

Admin. 19th, February, 2025

The South South Caucus of the House of Representatives has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Chief Edwin Kiagbodo Clark, a revered elder statesman, distinguished leader, and advocate for the development of the Niger Delta region and Nigeria at large. Chief Clark passed away at the age of 97, leaving behind a legacy of unparalleled service, advocacy, and leadership.

Chief Clark was widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s most influential voices in the fight for justice, equity, and regional development. He served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Ijaw National Congress (INC) and Leader of the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), organizations dedicated to advancing the interests of the South South region. His leadership in these roles positioned him at the forefront of the struggle for regional development and the empowerment of the Niger Delta people.

Throughout his career, Chief Clark demonstrated unwavering commitment to his people, region, and country. He was known for his ability to unite diverse groups and inspire action for peace, justice, and equitable development. His influence spanned across ethnic and political lines, earning him widespread admiration and respect not just in the South South, but across the entire nation.

A former Minister of Information and a key member of the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), Chief Clark played a significant role in Nigeria’s democratic evolution. He was a leading advocate for resource control, true federalism, and the recognition of the South South region’s rightful place in the nation’s political and economic landscape.

His advocacy also led to the establishment of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), a landmark achievement that continues to impact the region’s socio-economic transformation. Chief Clark’s relentless pursuit of economic empowerment, social welfare, and infrastructure development for the Niger Delta has left a lasting imprint on the region’s governance and peacebuilding processes.

Beyond his political career, Chief Clark was a statesman known for his integrity, patriotism, and commitment to national unity. His legacy extends far beyond his contributions to public policy and regional development; it lives on in the hearts of many Nigerians who benefited from his leadership and advocacy.

The South South Caucus, in reflecting on his life and contributions, reaffirmed its commitment to advancing the ideals he stood for. Chief Clark’s legacy will continue to inspire generations, especially in the South South region, to strive for a united, prosperous, and inclusive nation.

The Caucus extends its deepest condolences to Chief Clark’s family, the Ijaw Nation, the South South region, the government, and the entire country during this time of loss. His exemplary life and work will continue to guide the nation’s pursuit of unity, progress, and development.

Signed:

Rt. Hon. Fred Agbedi
Chairman, South South Caucus of the House of Representatives
