IWD: Ondo State Women Light Up The Event With Headgear
By Exponent News Akure, 8th March 2025.

It’s the same story across the globe today as women celebrate International Women’s Day worldwide. This day is specifically set aside to recognize women’s abilities and contributions to nation-building. To appreciate the pivotal role played by women, every 8th of March each year is designated to acknowledge women’s activities in politics, education, governance, corporate affairs, and other areas, celebrating their God-given talents in the building of both the nation and the international community.

For this reason, Ondo State women were not left out of honoring this year’s theme: For All Women and Girls: Rights, Equality, and Empowerment. The event, organized by the Ondo State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, was held at the International Events Centre (The Dome) in Alagbaka, Akure.

The event was arranged by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Women Affairs, Dr. Seun Osamaye, with the goal of empowering women with various skills in agriculture, entrepreneurship, and other areas to boost their business acumen and contribute more to the state’s and national economic growth. The event welcomed women from different categories across the eighteen local governments in the state. All the state women leaders and the senatorial leaders worked together to welcome Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa to the hall, alongside Deputy Governor Dr. Olamide Adelami and Speaker Rt. Hon. Olamide Oladiji, who also graced the occasion. HRM Oba Aladetoyinbo, Odudu the Second, the Deji of Akure, was in attendance to honor the event.

The atmosphere was charged as the event hall was filled to capacity with women dressed in colorful attire, making the event truly glittering. The program was designed to empower one thousand women to take charge of their lives. Women like the first female Secretary in Ondo State, Princess Oladuni Odu, attended to grace the occasion and rally support for other women and the host, Dr. Seun Osamaye. Female heads of security agencies were also in attendance.

In her speech, Dr. Seun Osamaye, in her first address since her appointment as the Special Adviser to Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, emphasized that the empowerment of women has arrived. She mentioned that all categories of women who attended the event now have equal opportunities in the government of Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa. She noted that for the past three decades, women have been advocating for positions of authority, and the current administration has placed women in key positions and empowered them. She further stated that when women are empowered, they can fulfill their potential and stand shoulder to shoulder with men.

She highlighted various initiatives that cater to all women, such as healthcare systems designed to support women, as well as digital initiatives aimed at empowering young girls in the digital world. Women professionals would also benefit from economic activities, and there would be accelerated actions for women to take the lead in the economic world. Dr. Osamaye concluded her speech by welcoming all the women on behalf of the ministry, expressing her love for them, and closing her remarks.

Just in:  Police rescue two abduction victims, suspects on the run

Police Nab Fake Midwife, Prophetess Over Suspected Maternal Deaths in Ondo The Ondo State Police Command has arrested two suspects, including a self-acclaimed midwife and a prophetess, in connection with separate cases of alleged maternal and infant deaths in Akure and Emure-Ile. According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, the arrests followed tragic incidents recorded under suspicious circumstances in both locations. In the first case, reported on April 16, 2026, a woman identified as Mrs. Bawa Blessing reportedly died after going into labour at a private residence in the Gloryland area of Akure. The residence, said to belong to one Elizabeth Aremu, who allegedly posed as a midwife, became the scene of the tragedy after the victim developed complications shortly after delivery and died before she could be moved to a hospital. Police detectives who visited the location discovered the lifeless body of a newborn wrapped in a sack. The suspect was subsequently arrested. In a separate incident reported on April 11, 2026, a 20-year-old woman, Genifer Sunday, was taken to a church in Emure-Ile during labour. The church’s prophetess, identified as Blessing Efiong, allegedly handled the delivery. The newborn reportedly died at the scene, while the mother later died en route to a hospital after developing complications. The prophetess has also been taken into custody. The police said the remains of the deceased mothers and their infants have been deposited at the State Specialist Hospital, Akure, and the Federal Medical Centre morgue for preservation and autopsy. The Command assured that comprehensive investigations are ongoing to determine the exact causes of the deaths and to ensure that anyone found culpable faces prosecution. It also cautioned the public against seeking medical care from unqualified individuals, stressing the importance of using licensed healthcare facilities, particularly for critical procedures such as childbirth. The Commissioner of Police, Adebowale Lawal, reiterated the Command’s commitment to protecting lives and property, while appreciating the support and leadership of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu. Residents were urged to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to security agencies as efforts continue to curb criminal practices across the state.
