As part of the National Assembly’s mandate to provide Nigerians with effective and inclusive representation, the legislative body has commenced a nationwide constitutional amendment process. Delegates from Ondo, Osun, and Ekiti States gathered at the International Events Centre—The Dome—in Akure to present their proposals to the amendment committee.

In his welcome address, the Governor of Ondo State, His Excellency Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, expressed appreciation to the committee, chaired by Hon. Abiodun Faleke, for their efforts. He noted that the review process offers an opportunity for the people of Ondo State to contribute their views to the constitutional amendment. He also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for his exemplary leadership.

Governor Aiyedatiwa emphasized that the exercise is an opportunity to identify areas for governmental improvement. He affirmed the state’s support for fiscal federalism and control over its natural resources. He also advocated for the establishment of state and community policing, citing underfunded centralized policing as a cause of insecurity across states.

The governor further called for constitutional recognition of the 33 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) created by the state. While not opposing the creation of new states, he firmly stated that Ondo would not support the merging of any part of its territory with another state.

During the technical session, about 81 bills were submitted. These included proposals on electoral reforms, judicial reforms, legislative reforms, inclusiveness, security, devolution of powers, strengthening of institutions, traditional leadership, fiscal reforms, citizenship and indigene rights, fundamental human rights, and local government autonomy, among others.

Representatives from Ekiti State advocated for the preservation of federalism. They called for amendments to Sections 2 and 3 of the Constitution and demanded gender equality and disability inclusion to ensure fair representation for women and persons with disabilities. They also proposed separating the roles of the Accountant-General of the Federation and the Federal Government.

Similarly, the Governor of Osun State, Senator Ademola Adeleke—represented by his deputy, Prince Kola Adewusi—urged the committee to address the high cost of attaining public office. He suggested that political positions be made less financially attractive to curb the “do-or-die” political mentality. The Osun delegation also backed devolution of powers, comprehensive restructuring, state policing, and electoral reforms.
