Armed Robbers Shoot OSOPADEC Chairman’s Driver in Akure

Admin. 5ft September ,2025

Armed robbers on Monday night shot and wounded Samuel Bernard, driver to the Chairman of the Ondo State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (OSOPADEC), during a violent attack in Akure.

Bernard had just returned from an official engagement with his principal in the riverine communities of the state before the incident occurred. According to Godwin Ewata, the commission’s Information Officer, the driver dropped the official vehicle at the chairman’s residence and was heading home in his personal car when he was ambushed.

The assailants reportedly shot Bernard, inflicted machete injuries on his head, and carted away his personal car. Ewata added that the robbers also took possession of the chairman’s car keys and sensitive documents in Bernard’s custody.

However, the situation took a twist when residents, alerted by Bernard’s cries, mobilised and pursued the attackers. With the aid of a tracking device installed in the official car, the community successfully recovered both the stolen vehicle and the seized documents.

Bernard was rushed to the State General Hospital, where he underwent an X-ray and was treated for his injuries. Ewata confirmed that he is now stable and recuperating.

The incident has heightened concerns about rising insecurity in Akure, though community members were praised for their swift intervention. As at press time, security operatives have launched an investigation, but no arrest has been made.
