Akure Nigeria — November 20, 2025

A Federal High Court in Abuja has convicted Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), on all seven counts of terrorism and sentenced him to life imprisonment.

Key Details of the Verdict

Judge: Justice James Omotosho delivered the judgment.

Conviction: Kanu was found guilty of incitement, issuing and enforcing “sit-at-home” orders, giving alleged bomb-making instructions, and other terrorism-related offenses.

Sentence Breakdown:

Life imprisonment for counts 1, 4, 5, and 6.

20 years for count 3.

5 years for count 7.

Sentences are to run concurrently.

Death Penalty Sought but Not Given: The prosecution had asked for the death sentence, but the judge opted for life imprisonment, citing the international trend against capital punishment and emphasizing “mercy.”

Legal and Political Context

Kanu has long rejected the court’s authority, representing himself in court after dismissing his legal team.

He previously filed a motion to stop the November 20 judgment, arguing that the terrorism laws under which he was charged are invalid or repealed.

Earlier, the court had “foreclosed” his defense after he failed to open it despite being given six days by the court.

Reactions & Implications

The ruling marks a major legal and political moment in Nigeria’s ongoing conflict with IPOB, a separatist movement demanding the independence of the South-East region.

For IPOB supporters, the sentence may deepen political tensions, as Kanu’s conviction removes him as an active leader but also potentially martyrizes him.

The government, for its part, sees it as a judicial victory and a strong message against secessionist violence.

Analysts warn of possible unrest or retaliatory protests, particularly in the South-East, where Kanu remains a polarizing figure.
