Aiyedatiwa Hails Olubaka’s Leadership as Oka-Akoko Marks Historic Ihare Elevation

Ondo State witnessed a vibrant display of culture and tradition on Saturday as Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa joined the people of Oka-Akoko to celebrate the elevation of the Olubaka of Oka, Oba (Dr.) Yussuf Adebori Adeleye, OON, JP, into the revered Traditional Elders Council (Ihare). The Governor used the occasion to underline the indispensable role of traditional rulers in sustaining peace and unity across the state.

Speaking at the Olubaka’s palace, Governor Aiyedatiwa said traditional authority remains the bedrock of security, conflict mediation and communal stability, noting that Oba Adeleye’s leadership reflects the enduring values of service, integrity and cultural preservation.

Describing the event as both historic and symbolic, the Governor said the monarch’s elevation into the exclusive Ihare circle was a testament to his wisdom and the dignity with which he has guided the ancient stool. He added that Ihare is reserved for individuals of outstanding character and influence, making the Olubaka’s induction a natural recognition of his peaceful and progressive reign.

The Governor congratulated sons and daughters of Oka at home and abroad and praised the Egbe Mabolaje of Ibaka Oka—also elevated during the ceremony—highlighting the importance of age-grade institutions as custodians of unity and discipline.

Re-emphasising his administration’s commitment to strengthening traditional structures, Governor Aiyedatiwa said monarchs remain vital partners in sustaining security and development. He noted that their counsel and prayers have greatly contributed to Ondo State’s stability and prosperity.

Felicitating Oba Adeleye on the dual celebration of the Ihare festival and his 82nd birthday, the Governor described the monarch as “a leader whose life embodies wisdom, dignity and unwavering devotion to his people.” He also acknowledged the Olubaka’s contributions as a pioneer member of the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria, former Chairman of the Ondo State Council of Obas and pioneer Chancellor of Adekunle Ajasin University.

In his remarks, Oba Adeleye described his induction into Ihare as a sacred transition rooted in age, endurance and wisdom. Reflecting on his journey from academia to the legal profession, the bench, and eventually the throne, he described each stage as preparation for service to Oka land. He emphasised that Ihare is conferred strictly by age, not wealth or status, and noted that the walking sticks given to celebrants represent resilience rather than frailty.

The monarch highlighted the historic importance of age-grade systems in Yoruba society, noting that they have served as moral guides, community protectors and vehicles for development—roles he has continued to strengthen during his reign.

Speaking on behalf of newly honoured chiefs, Senator Jackson Bent, the Yeye Aare Arimuyangan of Oka Land, expressed gratitude to the monarch and urged residents of Ondo State to keep supporting Governor Aiyedatiwa’s vision for progress.

The Governor’s Special Adviser on Transport, Akogun Olugbenga Omole, also commended the Governor, the Olubaka and the people of Oka for the success of the ceremony.
