The Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) has dismissed reports suggesting that its medical programme has been suspended, insisting that the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) remains fully operational.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the university explained that the decision to suspend admission into the MBBS programme for the 2026/2027 academic session is temporary and limited to one session only. According to the institution, the move is aimed at ensuring a seamless academic calendar and facilitating smooth, hitch-free clinical training for medical students.
FUTA described as false and misleading any claims or insinuations that the medical programme has been discontinued, stressing that such reports do not reflect the reality on ground.
The university further stated that the College of Health Sciences continues to work closely with the FUTA Teaching Hospital to guarantee uninterrupted and effective clinical training for students currently enrolled in the programme.
The institution expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu; the Ondo State Government under Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa; the Minister of Health, Professor Mohammed Ali Pate; the Deji of Akure Kingdom, Oba (Dr) Aladetoyinbo Ogunlade Aladelusi (CFR); elder statesman Pa Reuben Fasoranti; members of the FUTA/Akure partnership; the Ondo State Commissioner for Health, Dr Banji Ajaka; and other stakeholders for their roles in the establishment of the FUTA Teaching Hospital, which it described as critical to medical training in the university.
Reaffirming its mandate, FUTA said it remains committed to the training and production of high-quality medical and health professionals to support national development and well-being.
The statement was signed by the Director of Corporate Communication and Protocol, Mr Adegbenro Adebanjo, and dated February 4, 2026.
