From Relief to Recovery: OSOPADEC Begins Rebuilding of Ilaje Communities

By Olusegun HOSEA, Akure
The Ondo State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (OSOPADEC) has commenced a comprehensive relief and reconstruction programme for communities affected by the October 18, 2025 crisis in Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State.
The initiative, flagged off on Friday at the Commission’s Area Office in Igbokoda, targets victims in Obe-Nla, Obe-Adun and Obe-Jedo, marking what officials described as a transition from emergency response to long-term recovery.
Executive Chairman of OSOPADEC, Olabiyi Olaleye Poroye, said the intervention goes beyond immediate relief to restoring livelihoods and rebuilding critical infrastructure.
“We are not just responding to an incident; we are rebuilding lives and strengthening the future of our communities,” he said.
Poroye noted that the programme followed extensive consultations with residents, traditional rulers, youth groups and security agencies, including the Nigerian Navy, whose role in maintaining peace in the riverine areas he commended.
He added that the intervention received the approval of Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa in January 2026, reflecting the state government’s commitment to accountability and grassroots development.
Relief materials distributed include food items, clothing, mattresses, chairs and other household essentials aimed at providing immediate support for displaced families.
Beyond palliatives, OSOPADEC unveiled an economic recovery plan focused on reviving fishing and small-scale enterprises. The plan includes procurement of Yamaha outboard engines, construction of fishing boats, and the rebuilding of damaged homes.
According to the Commission, more than 25 houses have been earmarked for renovation, while severely affected structures will be reconstructed. Construction materials have already been delivered, with work set to begin immediately.
Plans are also underway for the construction of a modern bakery to replace the one destroyed during the crisis, alongside the provision of power-generating equipment to boost local businesses.
Chairman of the OSOPADEC Palliative Committee, Ola Judah, described the intervention as a data-driven humanitarian effort guided by global standards.
He disclosed that a verified database of beneficiaries was created to ensure fairness and transparency, adding that housing support includes the construction of 12-bedroom units and rehabilitation of other affected buildings.
“Our approach is deliberate—to restore dignity, stimulate productivity and build long-term resilience,” he said.
Also speaking, Chairman of Ilaje Local Government, Maurice Oripenaye, commended the initiative as a demonstration of responsive governance at the grassroots.
Community representatives, including Ogo Obadiah Omosowone, expressed appreciation to the state government and OSOPADEC for the intervention, describing it as timely and impactful.
Permanent Secretary of OSOPADEC, Festus Adewale Omomowo, assured that the programme marks the beginning of sustained development efforts across the Commission’s mandate areas.
Stakeholders at the event, including traditional rulers and community leaders, stressed the need for continued peace and collaboration to ensure lasting development in the affected communities.
