President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appealed to leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to provide women and youths with fair opportunities during the party’s primary elections across the country.
In a statement issued ahead of the commencement of the APC primaries nationwide, before it’s postponement to may 16th, 2026, Tinubu described the inclusion of women and youths in politics as vital to the growth and future of the party and the nation.
The President urged party leaders, governors, and stakeholders to ensure fairness and justice in the conduct of the primaries, stressing that all aspirants must be given a level playing field.
“The inclusion of women and youth is dear to my heart. I appeal to voters in the primaries and leaders at all levels to give special consideration to our women and youth in the contest. We cannot afford to relegate the two significant demographics of our population,” he said.
Tinubu noted that the APC, founded on the principles of progressive politics, consensus democracy, and sacrifice, was preparing for its fourth election cycle since its formation.
According to him, the primaries, which begin with the House of Representatives elections and end with the presidential primaries on May 25, 2026, are not just exercises to select candidates but a test of the party’s unity and strength.
The President commended ongoing efforts by party leaders to adopt consensus arrangements where possible, saying the move would reduce rancour and strengthen party cohesion.
He, however, advised that where consensus fails, members should conduct themselves peacefully and embrace democratic competition with sportsmanship.
“In every contest, there will be a winner and a loser. I urge the winners not to gloat in victory and the losers to show sportsmanship by taking things in good faith and preparing for another time,” Tinubu stated.
He warned against violence and divisive politics, stressing that politics should not be treated as a “do-or-die affair.”
Tinubu also called on winners and party leaders to reconcile with aggrieved aspirants, while encouraging dissatisfied contestants to make use of the party’s internal redress mechanisms.
The President further charged security agencies, particularly the police, to remain professional during the exercise and avoid interference beyond maintaining law and order.
“I wish all our aspirants and party members good luck and a successful outing. I look forward to working with the victorious aspirants for the success of our great party in the general election,” he added.
