In a major intelligence-driven strike, Nigerian and American forces have reportedly neutralized Abu-Bilal Al-Manuki, a senior commander of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), ending months of speculation over his whereabouts and operational activities.
The operation, authorities say, was the culmination of prolonged surveillance, phone intercepts, and intelligence gathering that began in December 2025. Unlike previous reports that misidentified Al-Manuki in northern operations, officials insist this time the intelligence is “100 per cent certain.”
Security sources explained that Al-Manuki had previously been mistakenly listed among casualties in 2024 during operations in Birnin Gwari, Kaduna State—a zone outside his actual operational sphere. The latest operation, however, was meticulously planned, verified, and executed to minimize errors.
“Multiple layers of confirmation were applied before the final strike,” said a senior security official. “This is not a case of mistaken identity or battlefield misreporting. Our intelligence was validated across human sources, digital surveillance, and communications monitoring.”
The target was reportedly under surveillance in several key locations, including Abuja and Maiduguri, with initial plans aiming to capture him alive. Analysts say sustained pressure and careful tracking were central to the mission’s success, reflecting a marked improvement over past counterterrorism efforts in the region.
Experts warn that premature doubts or comparisons to past errors in global counterterrorism—such as initial misreports of Abubakar Shekau’s death—should not diminish confidence in current operations. Nigeria’s military, in partnership with international intelligence agencies, continues to face one of the most complex insurgency environments globally, where targets operate across borders, assume multiple aliases, and embed themselves within civilian populations.
Military authorities maintain that the latest action marks a decisive victory against ISWAP’s leadership, underscoring the precision and reliability of modern counterterrorism operations.
